Small-town CIO leads high-tech initiatives via partnerships, open source

What we like about Manor’s initiatives are the fact that they are born from a city of limited resources – and yet they are remarkable enough to garner the attention of Government Technology magazine and Center for Digital Government.

The spark behind all this innovation is 23-year-old Dustin Haisler, the city’s CIO and new assistant city manager. Check out some of what he’s doing to put this small city outside of Austin on the technology map:

  • Created a partnership with Spigit Inc., a California company, to set up Manor Labs, a user-driven, online research and development project, which is part of a Stanford University initiative that costs the city nothing.
  • A tourism project that uses QR Codes posted at two dozen landmarks throughout town that to direct cell-phone users to a Web page with information about that particular locale. The city refers to it as their “SMARTtour.”
  • A partnership with Gov.Fresh.org for the city’s website, CityofManor.org, that was not only built on the WordPress platform, but is also packaging the theme and makingit available at http://tools.govfresh.com for any agencies to use at no cost.

We’d love to send Dustin a copy of our new Meeting Room Manager 8.0 to get his feedback!

This is a small city to watch. Make sure you’re following them at Twitter.com/cityofmanor
